Mirrors and Windscreens

“For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Wow, 2018 has ended.  For our family, it has been an incredibly demanding and challenging year. So much has changed.  At times we have felt we have been on a roller coaster. I wonder if we had known all the challenges, we had to face would we have said “yes Lord!” – I think so!

It really has been a challenging year, and yet within that we have felt a sense of God’s presence and leading.  Even in the most challenging times, we have sensed his love and guidance.

What does 2019 hold?  You see we can spend our lives looking back at what has passed that we do not see the hope and potential of what lies ahead.  If we spend our lives looking in the mirror and not out the windscreen of the car, we are likely to have a crash. That is why the mirror is a lot smaller than the windscreens.

What does 2019 hold?  We can come into it with a sense of fear and trepidation, or do we come at it knowing God is with us – no matter what we face!  There is a lot of fear right now, Brexit, financial crises Job insecurity etc.  Do we believe that God has gone ahead and will be with us?

In 1939- While war raged on King George VI quoted the first stanza of a poem.  It was words of comfort in time of trial because it reminded the nation as to who is Lord. When I was a young boy, I remember this poem well because it was on my grans' bedside table.  May these words be words of encouragement as we all launch into 2019 together!

‘God Knows'

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So, I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.
And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

So, heart be still:
What need our little life
Our human life to know,
If God hath comprehension?
In all the dizzy strife
Of things both high and low,
God hideth His intention.

God knows. His will
Is best. The stretch of years
Which wind ahead, so dim
To our imperfect vision,
Are clear to God. Our fears
Are premature; In Him,
All time hath full provision.

Then rest: until
God moves to lift the veil
From our impatient eyes,
When, as the sweeter features
Of Life’s stern face we hail,
Fair beyond all surmise
God’s thought around His creatures
Our mind shall fill.

May 2019 be a blessed and prosperous year for you and your whole family – With love from us all.
