Real Love

I don't know about you, but over the past week it feels like there are a lot of significant events happening in the country.

We saw the birth of Princess Charlotte to William and Kate.

This week we are electing a government to govern the country.

And of course the biggest news of all, the MK Dons won promotion to The Championship and made me a very happy chappy.

The birth of a baby and the success of a football team bring great joy. It can lift a person, lift a city and lift a nation.

But these are just momentary. Life goes on. It has ups and it has downs.

The things is when you reduce joy to the performance of a football team, or even the birth of a baby - you can miss what joy truly is.

Joy, according the the Bible, is a fruit of the Spirit. If we have the Holy Spirit living within us, we should increasingly feel and display joy. Not happiness, but joy. Not just laughing and smiling, but joy.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who was a French philosopher once said “Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God.”

Psalm 51:12 says, "Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.'

There is joy in knowing we are saved. The salvation that God has given us, brings us great joy. The knowledge that we are going to Heaven brings us great joy. The release of the burden of sin and shame, and it's place total forgiveness and abounding grace, brings us great joy.

But notice the second part of that verse. The Psalmist has just written about the joy of salvation and he follows it up that God would give him the strength to sustain him.

The joy of salvation was not reserved for the high moments of life. The easy moments. The care-free moments. This joy was in the moments where he felt tired, weak, and unwilling. He need the joy of salvation to sustain him. To carry him through. To strengthen him.

Today, our prayer should be the same. God, would you restore to us the joy of the salvation you have given us and would that joy sustain us and give us a willing spirit to do your will in our lives today.
