God, tell us stuff you want to tell us.

The word of knowledge: 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and ineveryone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means ofthe same Spirit…”

Many of the older translations, say “word of knowledge” rather than “message of knowledge”. It is awonderful gift, some of you may have experienced it yourselves, some of you may not yet.

Paul said to Timothy, “fan into flame the gift” and that would be my hope today in talking about this that this is real and that God does move in this way.

What is a word of knowledge?

God is omniscient which is a long word that basically means God knows everything and from timeto time God will choose to share some of that knowledge to a person for blessing.

When God chooses to share a word of knowledge with an individual, they know something they could not have known through natural means - basically we are talking here about supernaturalknowledge.

What does the gift achieve? What is the purpose of it?

1. It reveals information to enable God to bless someone.

Acts 10: Paul has a prophetic vision, he’s up on the roof praying and he is having a conversationwith God, when this happens…

“While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, ‘Simon, three[a] men arelooking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sentthem.’

21 Peter went down and said to the men, ‘I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?’

22 The men replied, ‘We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come tohis house so that he could hear what you have to say.’ 23 Then Peter invited the men into thehouse to be his guests.”

v19 - don’t suppose it was audible but he just got a sense that there would be three guys.

Going with these guys would have been counterintuitive to what was the obvious thing to do as they were Gentiles, he was a Jew and they wanted him to go to the house of another Gentile. Buthe went because of the word of knowledge.

The blessing of that word of knowledge is why we are here today as it meant that the Christianfaith was extended from just the Jewish nation to all people.

2. Specifically identify those the Lord wants to healWords of knowledge are often about a person who wouldn’t otherwise have come up for ministry. Ifyou are sitting there thinking I have a pain in my shoulder and I hope someone has a word ofknowledge about that, don’t wait just get prayed for!

But out Healing On The Streets team have had some incredible moments outside M&S where they have been praying for a complete stranger and have received a word of knowledge that has led tophysical healing.

Some people respond to a word of knowledge and don’t get healed. It’s not a guarantee - morethat the Lord was to minister.

3. It may be a key in evangelism.

John 4: Woman at the well.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a drink?’ 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can youask me for a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, youwould have asked him and he would have given you living water.’

11 ‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you getthis living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from ithimself, as did also his sons and his livestock?’

13 Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring ofwater welling up to eternal life.’

15 The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keepcoming here to draw water.’

16 He told her, ‘Go, call your husband and come back.’

17 ‘I have no husband,’ she replied.

Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have hadfive husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quitetrue.’

19 ‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.’

21 ‘Woman,’ Jesus replied, ‘believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worshipwhat we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come whenthe true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind ofworshippers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit andin truth.’

25 The woman said, ‘I know that Messiah’ (called Christ) ‘is coming. When he comes, he willexplain everything to us.’

26 Then Jesus declared, ‘I, the one speaking to you – I am he.’

Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I’ve ever done. Could this be the Messiah?’ 30 They came outof the town and made their way towards him.Jesus unravelled her life and told the deepest secrets of her heart.

4. It may reveal sin 1 Samuel 15, Saul went off to obey the Lord’s instructions to attack the Amalekites. But in verses 13-14, it says “When Samuel reached him, Saul said, ‘The Lord bless you! I have

carried out the Lord’s instructions.’

14 But Samuel said, ‘What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattlethat I hear?’ I don’t believe he couldn’t hear it in the natural, otherwise Saul wouldn’t have been as obvious. You

brought back plunder, allowing soldiers to keep livestock. In Proverbs it says - where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint. Where there is revelation, it can be a scary place to be for those who are living in a world of sin. If

you are having an affair, you would rather not be in a place where there are words of knowledge, because it is easier to maintain a sinful life when no one knows what is happening. But that is a much better place to be, may I add.

5. It may warn (2 Kings 6:9-12) The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: ‘Beware of passing that place, because the

Arameans are going down there.’ 10 So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by theman of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places. 11 This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, ‘Tell me!

Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?’

12 ‘None of us, my lord the king,’ said one of his officers, ‘but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.’ God was warning his people through a prophet in Israel so they wouldn’t get ambushed etc. John Wright example about the jewellery store.

6. It may facilitate healing: Matthew 9: 2, 6-7

Some men brought to him a paralysed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said tothe man, ‘Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.’

But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So he said to theparalysed man, ‘Get up, take your mat and go home.’ 7 Then the man got up and went home.

Clearly the thrust of this story is that Jesus is making a theological point that he has authority toforgive sins - but there may also be a connection between the man’s guilt and his paralysis, maybehe needed to know he was forgiven in order for the healing to come.

It may unlock something. We are not just body, but body, mind and spirit. One can affect another.

7. It may stimulate faith Sometimes when it is spoken from the front, we can have a word and see healing or comfort. It canincrease faith.

8. It may provide instructions. Mark 11:1-3 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it,

you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyoneasks you, “Why are you doing this?” say, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.”’ When they got there, they found the colt as Jesus had said. Here you could say, it was just a prearranged meeting. But it seems more likely to have been

supernatural knowledge. When you get there, you will find it. Jesus in the boat and the fishing. God speaks to those who listen.

How do we get them?

1. As an impression / thought / knowingDon’t think it will be a booming loud voice and you will be totally sure. It may simply just be ahunch, or an impression or that you think of something.

Those who have extensive experience in this area often describe it is “Knowing that they know thatthey know something.”

If I am being honest with you, when I have been moving in this gift, it is more that I think that I think that I might think something.

As long as you give it in a humble way, you won’t do any harm and you may just do a lot of good.

Andi picture of the gold earrings.

Often when I pray and give what I feel to be a word of knowledge, I see the person being prayedfor smiling because it obviously has to be for them.

2. As a pictureIf I asked you to picture Simon Cowell’s face - you could see it, some of you might see it moreclearly than others if you watch TV or read papers but you will see it in your mind - that’s your minds eye.

And that’s where you see these pictures, you simply see it. You think of the picture in your mind.

Cartoon character.

3. As a written word I have never had this, nor experienced it - but I shared a couple weeks back that GarethBrocklebank saw the word “Cambodia” over a lady sat in front of him. And that’s what this is,physically seeing a written word.

4. As a physical pain that doesn’t belong to you and maybe when you speak it out it leaves you. More often than not, I have felt this as a dull sensation and over the years here on Sunday mornings I have felt a pain in my shoulder or my knee and known that it isn’t my pain and when wehave shared it, others have received healing in those areas.

5. Automatic speaking This is something you haven’t been thinking about, you may be praying for someone, and as you

pray you find there are words that are coming out your mouth that may be right for the context ofthe individual you are praying for. Uganda village story - Kikobero village. Just a word of caution, these are power tools. God gives these gifts of the spirit. They are very

effective in restoring and building things.

Be aware that if you use these carelessly, you can actually hurt people. Especially if you havemissed it and have them wrong. So, a word of knowledge may be for your information, which you don’t actually just say to the

person you are praying with - something like the Lord’s told me you have cancer, you might just

want to pray around that and ask God how best to pray. Think about it and be careful to always remember this, in ministry of any kind if anyone is going tobe embarrassed make sure it is you, not the person you are praying with.

If anyone is going to get their feelings hurt, make sure it’s you, not the person. You might say, what if I get it wrong? Well, as long as you don’t pretend to be an expert. Don’t go around “Thus sayeth the Lord”. “God is

saying…”

Offer it humbly, say “I don’t know whether this means anything to you, but I just had this impression…” God can look after his reputation. God wants us to be naturally supernatural, he wants us to take risks and he doesn’t mind when we

fail as much as we mind. All of us can function in this gift. We are to eagerly desire this gift. You might say, I don’t get these. I mentioned the radio - sometimes we are just not tuned in to His

voice. You can only be tuned in when you are listening.
