A People of Encounter

Last week at the Vineyard National leaders Conference we had many great teaching, times of worship prayer and ministry.  One text that has really stood out for me is Exodus 33

"Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favour with me.’ If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.” The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”

Two things stand out in this text and I believe we as the church need to be lean into.

Firstly, God’s promise in verse 17 He knows us by name!  You are not forgotten.  You are not a Spiritual Orphan.  He knows you by NAME!  Each of our names is personal and unique to us.  He knows us by name.

Secondly and this is key, we need to be people of the presence.  We need to encounter God and His presence must go with us.  Moses got this.  He knew if they went on without God’s presence they would fail.  We as both individuals and as a church need to be a people seeking the presence of God.  We need to be people who encounter God in a real and tangible way.

How do we do this – How do we lean into God’s promises?
-Believe that it is possible
-Spend time with God in prayer and scripture reading
-Live daily watching for what God is doing. He is active, join Him in his activity.
