Hiding from God
Psalm 32:3-5 (NIV)

When I kept silent, my bones wasted away…Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.

Have you ever done a secret wrong? By this, I mean have you ever realized you have wronged someone without them realising that you were the source of their pain and then kept this knowledge to yourself? There is the story of little Johnny

A little boy visiting his grandparents was given his first slingshot. He practised in the woods, but he could never hit his target. As he came back to grandma’s back yard, he spied her pet duck. On an impulse, he took aim and let it fly. The stone hit its target. The boy panicked. Desperately he hid the dead duck in the woodpile, only to look and see his sister watching. Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing. After lunch that day, Grandma said, “Sally, let’s wash the dishes.” But Sally said, “Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen today. Didn’t you, Johnny?” And she whispered to him, “Remember the duck!” So, Johnny did the dishes. Later Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing. Grandma said, “I’m sorry, but I need Sally to help make supper.” Sally smiled and said, “That’s all taken care of, Johnny wants to do it.” Again, she whispered, “Remember the duck.” Johnny stayed while Sally went fishing. After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s, he could not stand it. He confessed to Grandma that he had killed her duck. “I know, Johnny,” she said, giving him a hug. “I was standing at the window and saw the whole thing. Because I love you, I forgave you! I wondered how long you would let Sally make you a slave.”

We could have many reasons for hiding our sin -, it is not so important; it will not really make a difference. Hiding my sin always seems like a good idea at the time, it seems like the easy way out – but is it.  David discovered in this Psalm that to hide our sin resulted in his “bones wasting away

What we need to realise is that we cannot hide our sin from God.  It is not like he will be surprised by our confession. He does not cry out “you did what?”.  No God already knows about our sin before we confess it.  In fact, confession is agreeing with God what He already knows – no surprises!

When we confess and are forgiven wow what an experience.  A weight is off our shoulders.  Confession and forgiveness are like a cool thundershower on a dry a dusty place.  In South Africa, when the land has become dry and dusty there is anticipation that comes as we wait for the thunderstorm to break.  You can smell that rain – and when it falls it clears the air and leaves behind a fresh scent.

Confession and forgiveness are like that summer rain for the soul, clearing the air and leaving behind the fresh sweet scent of renewal and growth.  You too can experience this.  Those things you thought you could hide from God – take it to Him.  Agree with God the true state of your soul and experience His forgiveness.  Do not be a slave to sin.

Blessings this Week
