Testing God

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.

O that today you would listen to his voice!
Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,

(Psalm 95)

I find Scripture so amazing.  We so often miss the beauty and depth when we read them superficially.  Even place names have deep meaning.  An example would be Meribah and Massah.  Massah means testing and Meribah means rebellion. These came about when Israel was wandering in the desert and both tested and rebelled against God.  I often wonder how the People of God who had witnessed the Miracle of their exit from Egypt had the audacity to rebel and test God.  They had seen His power.  Were they not at least a little afraid?

Then I look at myself.  We all have experienced God moving, we have seen Him do things and yet we put Him to the test.  The Psalmist is begging us to step away from the past, to do something different, to listen to God’s voice, to stop the testing and the rebellion and move to God.

The Psalmist is calling us to a place of understanding.  We are not bound in the Past.  We can change.  We do not need to act as we did yesterday.  By referring back to the events of the Exodus the Psalmist pleads with them not to do the same.  We can be different.  In fact, he reminds us we are God’s sheep and as such he will nurture and care for us.

Today we can not only hear God’s voice and feel the Holy Spirit moving within us, today we can listen and obey.  Where are you testing God, are you rebelling?  DON’T do it.  God calls you to be His sheep that hear His voice.  He loves you!

Blessings
